Sea (2021)

A ballet for Music and Dance, Premiered by New Chamber Ballet Created by Miro Magloire (choreographer) and Richard Carrick (composer)

Premiered by New Chamber Ballet, including pianist Melody Fader and violinist Doori Na, on May 28 & June 4, 2021 at Mark Morris Dance Center, NYC.

Sea was revised under non-covid restrictions and performed on June 30 & July 1, 2023.

About The Piece

"inspired by the movement of waves in the water"

In reality, Sea is much more than that. Sea has brought a new quality to New Chamber Ballet's work: the dancers perform the entire hour-long piece as an ensemble - dancing as a group in overlapping patterns and trading the lead roles every few moments. A tour de force of concentration and stamina (and imagine, it was initially performed with masks!)

The music consists of three works by Richard Carrick, “in flow”, Five Piano Preludes, and The Mill, the latter two of which were commissioned by New Chamber Ballet over the years. The result: a whirlwind of melodic and rhythmic impressions, many of them alluding to ancient sites around the globe ("a travelogue of haunting places," as the composer calls them). Miro's choreography responds with lilting movements that not only evoke water (an effect enhanced by Sarah Thea Craig's wallowing blue costumes) but surprise the eye with their rhythmic complexity.
